the dye in my dress will not stop bleeding?! help!?
so about a year ago i bought a $16 cotton/rayon maroon dress from forever21, the first time i wore it turned my white bra a pinkish red color, and my skin a redish color, darker in the places the fabric rubbed more (under my arms and under my chest)
i've done everything i can think of to get the dye to stop bleeding, i've soaked it in salt water and in vinegar, i don't know what to do, i've never been able to wear the dress again, it even stained a white tee shirt that happed to be hanging next to it in my closet
is there anything i can buy that will make the dye more permanent or remove the excess dye and stop the bleeding? does michael's craft, joann's fabric, or walmart sell anything to soak the dress in to stop it?
help! i want to wear my dress again!
Salt nor vinegar will work especially since you don't know what type of dye was use on the garment. Taking into consideration that this garment is cotton, it is probably just a matter of having excess dye in it. So the simplest solution would be to repeatedly wash the garment alone until you have clear water.
The test for whether all excess dye has been removed is simple: dampen the dyed item and iron it dry, while pressing it against a bit of white fabric. If the undyed fabric stays white, the dyed fabric can be trusted.
Normally, the most popular fiber reactive dye, requires at least one washing in cold water (without detergent, unless it's Synthrapol), followed by at least two washings in hot water, WITH detergent, to remove the last bits of unattached dye. Hot water is much more efficient than warm water at removing the last bits of unattached dye.
