Huge interview, men's attire question. . . .?
Hello, so I have this huge interview coming up next week (for a job in Japan) and I'm told it's best to wear a suit. I have never worn a suit, so I have to go buy one. I'm actually excited about this.
I'm wondering if you guys (or girls) have ideas on suits, dress shirts, pants, ties, shoes, belt, etc.
I'm in the early 20s, latino guy. . .
I'm thinking about buying a grey suit (not sure if I'm going light grey or not), white shirt, black tie, brown(ish) shoes. what do you think?

Oh yeah, I haven't thought about price range. I think I'm willing to spend up to $300.
I'm not going to some corporate meeting. I'm going to an interview. yeah, it's a big interview but I've been looking online, going out to department stores, macy's, boston store, H&M, and many of their suits, which i find appealing (especially a grey one I saw at h&m), cost no more than $250. that's the suit alone, since I already have plenty of shirts and ties to choose from.
For interviews, I would recommend going more traditionally when picking out your interview wardrobe. Interviews aren't the place to ger creative with a wardrobe. Also, bear in mind that Japan still has a very strong sense of tradition and formality, especial within business. There is also still a prevailing notion that clothing speaks volumes about person, a mentality that goes back to the era of Shoguns.
Yes, a gray suit is the way to go. It is a traditional a safe way to go for an interview. However, light is not the proper the shade for the suit. I would suggest a darker shade of medium gray, or a lighter shade of charcoal. Darker is typically more traditional, and therefore, safer for an interview, as you will likely not know the exact nature of the dress code until you get the job. An alternative to the gray suit is a navy suit; a traditional choice, the navy blue suit is another staple of the business wardrobe. Also, when you get called back for a second interview, it is good to have a different suit to wear. As far a suit style is concerned, two button with flat front pants is the best route, as it has staying power in the wardrobe. Two button will also flatter most body types.
White is the proper choice for a shirt, too. There is absolutely no way to screw up a white shirt. For the second interview, a robin's egg blue is a great choice.
For ties, get a handful of basics: stripes, plaids, and pindots are good patterns. Get them in some basic business colors like yellow, dark red, blue, lavender. A black tie is good to have in your wardrobe, but it is for formal occasions, not business.
When it comes to shoes, a pair of black oxfords never goes amiss, even with the blue suit. It is the most traditional choice, which again would be my recommendation for the interview. If you decide to wear a tie that has red as the main color, I would eschew the black shoes in favor of a pair of cordovan lace ups, as the red tones will play off each other for a balanced look. Brow shoes looks great with either a blue or gray suit, but abrown shoes are still viewed in some business circles as too casual for wear with a suit, so I would steer you away from that choice until you get hired. The belt is meant to match your shoes, and socks are meant to match your trousers.
When it comes to budget, you should probably be spending about fifty dollars on your shirts, at least a hundred on your shoes, and four hundred on a suit is a reasonble price for a garment that will still deliver good quality. One of the better national chains that I know of is Men's Wearhouse. there is almost always a sale, too, so you don't need to break the bank to build a wardrobe. All totaled, you can be outfitted for a complete wardrobe for in the neighborhood of about $1000 or less. Remember, too, that dress clothes will last you a long time, so you won't need to go shopping all the time if you start with the basics.
